THE QUICK TAKE
  • Manipulation is a tougher bottleneck than navigation or conversation.
  • Useful home robots will likely begin with a small menu of chores.
  • Safety and repairability may matter more than humanoid appearance.

Why hands are hard

A kitchen is a chaos laboratory. Objects bend, slip, spill, break, and hide behind one another. Humans solve that mess with touch, vision, experience, and little adjustments we barely notice. A robot has to calculate the whole dadgum affair.

What arrives first

The first useful machines probably will not do every chore. They will handle repetitive jobs in carefully mapped homes, use special tools, and politely refuse unfamiliar situations. That may sound less like science fiction, but a machine that reliably unloads a dishwasher is still one heck of an engineering achievement.
